All VW Diesels I have had have had the separator built in to the fuel filter itself. The filter is mounted upright and there is a drain cock on the bottom of the filter for periodic draining. However, there is no sight glass, so you must either drain at regular intervals or wait until you get a bad batch of fuel and drain in desperation!
