Hi Björn,

I had a similar problem with my '87 GL. Turned out to be an overflow tank with a hairline crack underneath (patched with duct tape by PO). I could not find any water leaking but always smelled like coolant around the rear. Finally, I took the cooling components apart one at a time until I found the culprit. $26 from the local VW dealer and I was ready to go.
