Chris:
Thanks for the excellent post. This only serves =
to reinforce my wish for
some sort of "bolt on" overdrive for the =
Syncro!
In my Jeeps with ultra low crawler gears (5.88 final, =
7.68 1st, and 4.?
transfer case ratios), it was pretty easy to get =
crazy with gearing, since I
would just tow the Jeep to the Rubicon, then have =
fun. Tough to tow a
Syncro Westy to a trail head, though! =
:-)
The other great thing about old Jeeps was the =
availability of a Warn (now
Saturn) overdrive unit. These basically bolted =
to the back of the transfer
case, and installed a set of planetary gears onto =
the mainshaft of the
transmission as it came into the transfer case. The =
planetaries were (are)
engaged with a lever that is mounted next to the =
regular shifter. (so you
ended up with three shifters). Another fun =
thing was with the overdrive,
transfer case, and the 4 spd transmission, I had 16 =
forward gears and 4
reverse gears! (I would always park with the =
gears all screwy, knowing that
no one would be able to figure out how to drive it =
if they tried to steal
it)
With the huge variety of Volkswagen transaxles out =
there, I am surprised
that I have never heard of an overdrive unit of some =
sort being developed
for the aftermarket...
