Hey Michael,
I hope you don't feel too stupid now. The same = thing happened to me. It took me about 6 months of tedious = cleaning and scratching my hand on this stupid grate until I finally = figured out that it's easily removed.

The stove top grate removes easily...
either pull or push (forgot which) from the front =
and the prongs will
release their grip on the holes, then lift up... =
easy!
