For your front heater, besides checking or replacing =
the
relay, you might test the blower switch in the dash heater control =
before taking
out your heater (to get to the blower fan itself). The dash switch =
is
inexpensive, under $10, available from Bus Depot I think (I got one =
quickly from
my local VW dealer). It is a simple 3-position plus off =
switch that
routes the current to the various resistors (or no resistor) which are
located near (I think)the blower motor itself.
Probably can't open up the switch to spray it out, but it is fairly =
easy to
get it out of the dash (under the heater controls cover plate where it =
clips in
from the front). See Bentley 97.116 (if you have it) for the =
wiring
diagram and 80.14 for a picture of the heater with series resistance =
wiring to
the fan motor. You can get at all the relays easily (one screw out =
of the
fuse box to drop it down to access the relays which mount above the =
fuses) but I
don't see how you could get at the front blower motor without taking the =
dash
out and the heater apart.

Woody, Your tip =
is was most
timely. I am having problems with my heating system. Front heater: Blower motor runs fine on "High", =
but on the
other settings, the motor runs in fits and starts. Very erratic. =
Is this
symptom solid for a relay problem? And you say I can get to it somehow =
through
the dash, without having to remove it. That would be terrific.
