i'm facing a bit of a dilemma. i have a '91 vanagon
with 142k miles and a leaking head gasket. do i go
ahead and get the gaskets (possibly the heads too)
repaired/replaced and hope that nothing goes wrong
with the bottom half of the engine any time soon? or
would it be a better idea to have the engine replaced
with a rebuilt? any wisdom that could be passed on
would be greatly appreciated.

the "average" life of a 2.1L is about 150k miles.  you can get more, or you
can get less.    lister Karl Bloss has 200k mi on his 2.1L (2nd head job) but
ive heard of people throwing rods at 80-100k.

its your call. how long do you plan on keeping the van?
