I just have a little trouble relating the failure of the 2.1 connecting rods
to the fact that that crank is not "fully' counterweighted...The 1.9's
aren't either, correct? so if the longer stroke (with it's non-linear
increase in acceration and big end rod loading) is NOT the reason, then WHY
does the 1.9 not blow up like the 2.1?

As far as it being a racing engine?

There is an increased angle to the crank with the longer stroke and more
stress on the 2.1L rods.

I was referring to what T1 engines routinely are turned into...

The WBX is already, with just with a smaller cam and reduced intake with the
use of a center airbox and air runners.  Simply changing the cam AND the
intake to dual-dual throat 45 mm carbs or Digital FI, the power can jump to
150 HP or more...

I have seen MANY built T1 powered Bugs BLOW the doors off high horsepower
"American" race cars.  It is a routine as many of the VW Bug shows across the
world...And on the roads every where...
