check the archives.   hashed this over about a year or 2 ago. final consenus
was that the inline 4 is a better, easier , cheaper conversion.   fyi, detlev
hanschke is doing these conversions at his shop in livermore, ca.  ps, the MC
turbo5cyl would just destroy the vanagon trans.

OK, I know, I have been asking a lot of questions on engine swaps, but I have
one more. I have only seen one Audi 5cyl enigne swap page and it was in
Germany
so many of the parts are different and prices don't me a thing. So, has
anyone
in the US put a 5cyl Audi in a Vanagon? Is there any web pages?
The reason I ask all this is that I have been keeping my eyes open for an
engine to install in my 85, but I find salvage yards ful of 5cl Audis and no
2.0l VWs. I can get these 5cyls for about $150-200 each, so I could afford a
spare. Is the engine adapter the same as the 1.8-2.0L? Could I mount this
engine at the 51deg angle like the Diesel to gas conversion? I know that
there
would be mount issues to work out and some other things that might make it
more
difficult(like having to make an oil pan and modify the pick up tube). Is
this
a real option or a waist? Are these engines reliable? I know they offer
these
in South Africa and they seem popular there.
I like the idea of more torque and HP in the lower RPMs. With the
availability of these engines to me at a very low price, I have to look into
it. One local U-Pull has 4, the next yard had at least 4, another yard had
about 6. All can be had for about $150-200 each.
Any info would be great. I know that there are people out there that realy
love
the 2.0l, I know all about it, tell me about the Audi cyl.
