The little filter basket in the top of my '86 Vanagon's brake fluid reservoir

has quite a bit of brown gunk (not particulate, more like chemical) in it.  Seems

like the basket should lift out, but it doesn't seem to want to.

 

Does the basket come out, or should I just "turkey baster" the stuff out?  Or just

leave the gunk in there for good luck?  Thanks.
