You all may not believe this, but I just re-geared my 82 Vanagon/85 Jetta
conversion and got 27mpg on my last tank. All highway, granted, but all
mountains too. I used an 81 air-cooled transaxle, not sure what the ratios
are. Climbing the steep stuff, I'm limited to about 55 mph in 3rd gear, but
when it flattens out a bit, 70-75 is very comfy.
