I have to disagree.  VW's own VR6 uses both a mechanical(belt-driven) water
pump, and an electric pump.  If you did want to run an extra pump on a
Vanagon, the best way to do it would be to have it pumping towards the
radiator.  Probably wouldn't be too terribly hard to install up near the
spare tire.  Just wire it in to come on with the ignition.

Electric water pumps (with no mechanical thermostat) are common on race
cars, but they are a complete replacement for the mechanical pump.  With
both types of water pumps installed, coolant flow would be blocked unless
both were running.
