I did something like that last year. = Got 4 steel 14" wheels and lug nuts from an ' 84, had  4 studded = Hakkapeliittas put on them and put them on the ' 87 Westfalia in place of the factory = alloys, driving in the snow was wonderful no slipping and sliding especially = when starting and stopping on inclines. The only down side was up to a ski = resort that was chains or 4 wheel drive with snow tires only, I had to put on = chains... I argued a lot that my studded snow tires could out brake and out turn = those SUV with the Fake(highway) M & S but to no avail.....  The only = bad  thing was these tires where/are load rated 1235 lb. per tire not LT = rated but high speed and heat were not a factor, so that would be something to check.    Lloyd in Eureka, Calif

Subject: Winter wheels

Am I right to assume that steel = wheels off an 84 Vanagon GL will fit my 91 Vanagon GL. I intend to mount Nokia = 185/R/14 C2's for winter use. What about studs since they will be winter only = tires--any suggestions? THX.
