I had this same problem on a recent trip to = northern Canada.  Being new to VW I could not tell if it was = turning over properly or not, so I bought a new battery.  Lets = just say that now I have the Aux battery I wanted (but not the type I = was looking for!).   In addition to the starting problem, my = van lost power on the tip back and can go only 50-55mph.  I think = it may be a fuel delivery problem or sparking problem.  I have it = in the shop now.  I'll let you and the list know what the = diagnosis is.

In addition, if you have the fridge with the = diode readout, you can check the condition of the battery through the = display.

I would most certainly make sure that = the oil is 10W30 or 10W40, as these
are thinner when cold. Also make sure = that the battery is filled up with
water (boiled or distilled), and = charged properly, you might want to
consider a new battery.
