I've run into this problem before.  I went to order a set of shafts for a customer's vanagon in the shop. The rebuilder had a listing for an Automatic.  They shafts on an Auto are different.  Your right the shafts of a standard trans are the same.  The CV joints themselves are the same '68 and up.
