The questions then are - why am I only getting 8-9 gallons per fill-up
(about 180-ish miles per tank)? And what can I do about a gas cap? I'm
beginning to think I don't have an original gas tank but I don't know how to
tell.

Not sure what to say about the cap issue -- the cap mates with a
filler assembly that's not strictly speaking part of the tank at all.

How do you know the tank is empty or near empty? i.e. I wouldn't assume
that a gas gauge in the red is accurate. Several things, both mechanical
and electrical, can affect that gauge.

David - It seems fine. The first gas fill-up was before he finished the

consistent but really, I have no idea. Is there any way I can tell for sure?
Short of actually running it out of gas, which I'd rather not do.

By my calculations for a standard Vanagon gas tank of 15.9 gallons, at about
21 mpg, I should be getting about 315 miles per tank. Does that sound

Mine was running out of gas at the 3/4 mark. The first time I was
just on my way out, turned around, came home and poured a gallon in &

The next time (I had to check it <g>) I was on my way to work and
drove into a gas station bucking and generally feeling like I was out
of gas at the 3/4 mark. It took 12 gallons to fill it and then it ran
great. I changed the tank and all that problem went away.

As has been mentioned, your gauge may be faulty. The sure way to know,
is to carry some spare fuel in a gas can and drive until you run out
of gas (caution!)... OK, perhaps a better, more conservative approach
- just see if it will hit ~250-ish miles.

What was the problem with the stock / Van-Cafe locking gas cap? Snap a
pic of the filler opening without the cap for us to see.

Correct. Of course -- YMMV (literally). For every new-to-me car I do the
suggested thing of carrying a gallon of gas in the car and driving until the
odometer suggests I am way low on gas. With luck you will not actually run
out.

If you're really detailed-oriented you can note your miles travelled at the
various marks on the gas gauge and once you know your mileage roughly figure
what they mean.

The locking gas cap simply won't stay on. It doesn't fit tight and just

Just speculating here and it's hard to tell from the photo, but if previous
owner had a locking cap and lost the key, the PO make have had to pry the
cap off and this can ruin the filler opening so that no cap will ever fit or
lock down correctly. Both my 84's are the same filler neck as 85 (actually

I agree -- I don't like the look of what I can (and can't) see of that inner
lip which is what pulls the cap tight as you turn it. Looks like that lip
may be mooshed a bit?

Yes, it does look a little out of whack. But the good news is . . . I just
went and bought a new gas cap - same kind as before - and it fits perfectly.
I don't know why the other 2 we bought and tried didn't fit but this one

So, I'll see what happens with the fill up in the next few days once I've
ran the gas gauge down to the bare minimum. I'll let you all know what I
figure out (or don't figure out, LOL as the case may be).

Looks like the receiver is pretty mucked up. Gasket appears stretched and maybe broken, and there appears to be rust or some other dirty looking material on the receiver. Maybe cleaning it would make a cap fit better, but perhaps it needs replaced. Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. I've never known of one needing replacing, on a Vanagon or any other vehicle.

flange that the three mounting screws pull up against the inside of
the bodywork -- the sealing gasket is on the cap itself. The rust on
the sealing edge around nine to two o'clock may be a sealing issue
but not a cap-retention one. The visible tang inside the fitting at
about eight o'clock definitely appears bent as others have said. The

I'd suggest to clean up the rust at the rim, and otherwise if your
cap stays on and holds pressure (your next inspection may tell you
that) to not worry further about it.

after I've been burnt to a crisp. Knowing the empty point and how
much fuel went in after you ran out, you may find a gas station with
enough leisure to allow you to fill it a gallon at a time with a
