Martin,

Vanagon trannies are vented and should not build up any pressure, your vent must have been plugged. I don't have the Bentley in front of me, but if you feel up around the top of the tranny you should find a raised plastic cap that covers the vent hole. Check it when you change the fluid to make sure there is not a build up of dirt here.

If pressure builds up too high for too long you will eventually blow oil past the seals, not a good thing!
