If you are overwhelmed by the volume of mail (it takes a strong commitment) you can always switch to "digest mode" which wraps all the little e-mails into several bigger ones.

The only problem with digest mode is that it is not html-friendly, and you will have to wade through a lot of html gibberish to find the imbedded messages in e-mails coming from people with html e-mail clients. (Like *&#$* Outlook 2000 of which I am a victim)
