The shut off valve is in the off position, according to the manual. I tried it in both positions though, and as I said, basically got hot and warm air, depending on whether the valve was on or off. And then a day later I ran it again, and the air still felt warm. But, since the unit does not draw air in from the outside, maybe it was blowing the already warm air in the van. In any case, the air is noticeable when the fan is on, as it is warmer than the rest of the air in the vehicle. Oh well, sweatin' to the oldies I guess.
