Lloyd,

my '85 gives me the same symptoms after interstate travel....I'm still trying to figure out the exact problem this time around, but in the past it has been a compression leak into the cooling system either from a bad head gasket(the metal ones on top of the barrels) or a cracked head.

Before panicing though, check the main coolant tank. If the level is topped up and no hissing comes out when you open it cold you are probably OK and somehow just overfilled. If you hear lots of gurgling and hissing as you open it cold you could have a compression leak that has charged the cooling system with air and displaced coolant.

Mark

Hi My 83 Westy was stored for the winter. In april I noticed that the overflow tank appeared empty so I added some. This past weekend I took it out and headed for North Conway NH. When I returned home after the 300 mile trip the overflow tank was completely full and coolant was coming out of the top of it. At the time I was parked on a slight uphill incline. The temperature gauge was normal and the engine did not appear to be overheated. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Many thanks, Lloyd Perkins
