Assuming it is just a bearing and brushes replacement then this is an OK DIY job. If it requires electronics then you are better off taking it to an expert and pay the 100+ bucks

The Bus Depot sells one of the 2 bearings, for the rear of the Alternator, as well as the replacement brushes. ($15) You can get the front bearing (the one supporting the shaft closest to the pulley) at most FLAPs. It is the same part as for a Jetta or Pussat alternator and runs about $25.

As far as doing it yourself you may need a good clean work area to capture the little screws, some sore of a puller to get 1/2 of the assembly off the rest of the alternator and then go for it. Good exploded picture in Bentley. You may need to solder the brushes on the retainer, depending on your requirements.

So let's see you could be out $40 or so in parts + your time and your potential damaging of the alternator ramroding a screwdriver trying to get things appart or you could be out ~$120-~$150 for a good rebuilt from any of the fine VW parts vendors. What is your time worth? Either way you have to take it out of the van and replace it. Hey good time to change the fan belts!

Good luck,

Joel
