Hey Michael, I hope you don't feel too stupid now. The same thing happened to me. It took me about 6 months of tedious cleaning and scratching my hand on this stupid grate until I finally figured out that it's easily removed. The stove top grate removes easily... either pull or push (forgot which) from the front and the prongs will release their grip on the holes, then lift up... easy!
