I have used longer 14mm studs sold at VW specialty shops. The brand name is EMPI, part # 70-2810-0, 14mm x 2.20 inches. The useful length is 50mm. The splined section was slightly too large in diameter but a few seconds with a bench grinder takes care of that. I was able to install these without even removing the hub from the Vanagon. With the drum off there is room to remove the old and install the new. I used a spare lug nut and a stack of washers to pull the new stud into place.
