Javier,
If I would have known I would have answered. I am not sure how many carbureted engines are here in the US. Less than one percent I guess.
So there is I think the reason why none answered. But it is a common thing. Not every question gets answered right away. It's a matter of luck too. We think sometimes that we don't know well enough and hope that the guys who knows best will help. In that case it will work out that he is the busy adviser.
The timing was a thread lately on the fuel injected ones here. It maybe the exact same for yours though. Try to advance it and see. What is it suppose to be now? Here the timing is 5ATDC, and some guys put it 5BTDC and are very happy with the power.
ATDC-After Top Dead Center
BTDC-Before Top Dead Center
Which means that the number one cylinder is on top. That is the dead center. Really only when it is firing. The position is important when you set the valves and check the rotor position.
To advance the timing you would have to loosen the bolt that keeps the distributor in position and turn it against the direction of the rotor's turn.
If you don't have a timing light to see the V cut on the pulley, turn it until the engine sound funny and wrong, and then come back a little where it is still fine. Ride around with it and see. If your ignition is not electronic, your gap of the points(dwell) will change the timing as it changes. The gap gets smaller and the timing gets worse. I am thinking now that it will make it more retarded or more advanced. But either way it is out from where it was set. I think it is more advanced, it gets lifted earlier.
But it may not be the timing. It might be not enough fuel. And that is something I can not tell. I hope it helped.
Zoltan

Subject: What`s wrong/ Foreign member?
Hi all:
I would like to know what is wrong with my question not being answered; I know the list is for Vanagon subjects and mine is (correct timing setup for my 84 Carburated Westy); by far much into the subject than Sears` and Bozo`s threads which; so far, exceed 50 messages.
That is why I want to ask what is wrong with me; do I have to ask in other terms?; talk only about non-related Vanagon things?; or just be quiet as a foreign member in the list?
If I`m asking about the timing is because I need it; have been traveling to the Highlands and need to have some extra power like had last year before the tune-up.
Any advise will be appreciated
Javier Zavala
