Hot start problems are common with busses, less common with Vanagons. When the engine is hot, the starter solenoid can require more juice to kick over. If there is a minor voltage supply problem it can be enough to prevent the solenoid from kicking when the engine is hot. Check for loose wires, dirty connections, etc. If that doesn't make a difference, try installing a Bosch WR1 relay kit (under $10, redirects the current from the battery directly to the starter instead of via the ignition switch). If that fails, you may need a starter (or a solenoid, which is included with the starter or available separately).

Meanwhile, if it happens again, you can usually give the solenoid a firm rap with a hammer, then try again and it will start right up. (Or pop start the van of course.)
