       Mervyn, no need to explain further.  I know exactly what your talking 
about.  Been there and DONE that !  Take the cover off the winding mechanism 
and make sure the cable is not kinked and is in the grooves in the winding 
wheel.  Once this condition is met then you will have to stretch the cable 
back to position and reconnect the guide and install a new rivet.  Find and 
use a metal rivet.  DO NOT TRY TO REUSE OR USE A SIMILAR PLASTIC MICKEY MOUSE 
RIVET THAT THE FRIGIN' VOLKS FACTORY PUT IN THERE !  It will be hard to 
stretch the cable back to its original position because as you found out the 
tension springs on the ends of the cable.  They're pretty stiff alright.
