Read your last line first. Seems kind of ironic, don't it? The truth is that your formula for calculating power from compression increases is flawed, (and is typical armchair engineering) because it doesn't take into effect other changes. Cams, for example, can change the static pressure at any given point in the RPM range, which will change the effective compression ratio. This is only one example, but it sort of points out how blanket statements like your formula really have no place in the real world.
