Does the battery light go out if you blip the throttle? On my diesel the battery light will not go out (and the battery won't charge) until I've revved it once above 1,500 RPM or so. After that it's fine until the engine is shut off again. Don't know about the OX light but VW sometimes likes to wire other lights to the alternator light for testing purposes. (So they'll come on before you start the engine.)
