Go to Radio Shack and buy one of their cheapo digital multimeters. They are pretty accurate, will serve well for resistance and voltage checks. The digital feature is a must for troubleshooting charging circuits, as the small, but critical, voltage fluctuations found here will not resolve well enough on an analog meter. You will, ultimately, need some sort of current ( amp ) meter(s) also. The multimeter probably will not give you this function, or at least not enough to be really useful. Also, buy a good book on automotive, or marine ( basically the same ) electricity.
