Subject: Rear hatch for '88 GL - what years fit?
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

I'm considering replacing my rear hatch due to rust on the inner side, just above the weatherstrip, which allows dust to enter the cabin. It's an '88 GL with rear wiper - does anyone know what other years will fit (I'd like to keep the wiper, but size of VW emblem not critical - mine's missing anyway...).

It seems the drainage on the bottom of the hatch is poorly designed - it traps moisture in the folded seam, since the drains are about 1" higher than the bottom of the door. Is it a common problem for rust through just above the seams (thus creating drains where they should have been...)? I'd be prepared to try a repair if I thought it might last more than a year or two, and not just hold more moisture...
