I can tell you why, to even out the corrugations. You lay on a mattress on
top of the engine lid and those damn corrugations hurt!

I made a flat floor and deck lid with Coroplast, a common signmaking
material:

It's a lot of work cutting strips and gluing though, but my floors are flat.
