A Toyota flat-4 (not a boxer) would be ideal. That's the version of the 3C-T 2.2, used in the Japanese-only market narrow-bodied version of the Estima (the wide-body is exported as Previa or Tarago).

It's a straight-4 laid on its side. Same engine is available in the Liteace (both turboed 3C-T & nonturboed 3C) van and Camry (turbo only). It is a direct derivative of the 1.8-liter 1C and 2.0 2C/2C-T, a proven design. It can move an Estima along very well, accelerating strongly uphill in 4th (around town) and quickly reaching 160kmh. Available through used-parts exporters in Japan (see Japan Yellow Pages in you library) and possibly through US engine importers. Supposedly they have a electronic control unit, dunno what for.

That's the only flat car diesel I know of.

Of course you could try converting a Subaru engine to diesel... not impossible to do. Say Audi or Mercedes V6 diesel heads on an SVX engine? Or shave the Subaru heads, redesign the camlobes, fit custom high-crown pistons... -- Andrew Grebneff Dunedin New Zealand Fossil preparator <andrew.grebneff@stonebow.otago.ac.nz> Seashell, Macintosh, VW/Toyota van nut
