Some math...

Say on your you drive 10,000 miles round trip and get an average of 17mpg (that's what my '85 1.9 averaged). That means you would burn 588 gallons of gas. Assume that gas averages $3.00/gallon. Your cost of gas would be ~$1,765.

What happens if gas goes up and averages: $3.25 = $1,911 $3.50 = $2,058 or *gasp* $4.00 = $2,352

So yes, it is a lot of money - much more than in the past, but it's still a lot less than a lot of the world pays for fuel. I don't like it, but I can and do save money in a lot of ways with driving the van and sleeping it it vs. driving a car and using hotels. Plus I ride my bike a lot of the time, so it's kind of fun to burn some gas every once in a while.
