This is on a '90 where the layout is different:

A|B|C|D|E

A= pump B= Pilot start button C= Thermostat knob D= Gas valve knob E= Mode selector

Gas valve (D) open. Thermostat (C) set to 0: Pilot LED lights up. Turn thermostat (C) higher (cooler) pilot goes out. I'm going to pull the fridge out and investigate this week, hopefully.
