The air cooled vans use a switch in the air flow meter to activate the fuel pump. Find out why the engine isn't sucking the AFM flap open and you will solve your problem. Check the air intake boot and the hoses for the crank breather and decel valve.

It is aircooled. Won't start. But the starter winds the engine. The fuel pump is not running. I can make it go if I flip the Airflow meter gate open before. Anyone knows where the trouble is? Zoltan
