Hmm... if he has the cash to cover the check to begin with, he can go into his bank, write his check to cash and then hand you the money. So not taking the check in this case seems like a REALLY good plan to me.

Sounds like the guy didn't live up to his end of the interaction. Ben did his job, and the customer's job which is to contribute in exchange for service didn't do his job, in fact he wasn't even prepared to do his job. All the time Ben was working this guy could have been on top of figuring out how he was going to pay for it, but he didn't, and couldn't. That's just thoughtless and rude if nothing else.

Bummer Ben. It's definitely the combination of good provider/good customer that makes it all worthwhile and rewarding for everyone. The product of two positives is positive, throw in one negative and you know how it goes... if they're both negative, then nobody cares how it turns out anyhow.
