Dave, I don't see a bunch of response on your question but I'll chine in
with my limited experience.  Based on my own use (and a lot of comments on
various Internet forums) Microsodt Streets & Trips seems by far to be the
best.  I know that I found the Delorme software really lousy.  Street &
Trips also has coverage of Canada though my understanding is that it is not
as good in remote areas as it could be.
Other software that provides topo data has mixed reviews and much more
limited trip planning capabilities.
I've had long discussions on this topic with Curt Long, here in Washington.
Curt has used several GPS units from handhelds to dedictated vehicle systems
and all tend to fall short of the expectations we might have as Vanagon
drivers heading into the boondocks.
I'd suggest you do some snooping on the Internet looking for GPS forums that
are focused on Canada.  That's probably your best bet for finding good info.
And BTW, if you find the 'perfect solution', let us all know!!  You are not
the only one looking for better solutions.
