I think this is something like what you are looking for: http://home.earthlink.net/~johndolsen/id4.html. This version is mounted to to nose of the van, but the same idea could most likely be adapted to the rear of the van instead. The only worry that I would have with the swing-away hinge style carrier you are describing would be finding a suitable mounting location that could handle all of the torsional force from the weight of the scooter when the mount is in the open position.

Hello

Has anyone ever tried or seen anyone build a motorbike carrier for the back=

of a vanagon?? We have a yamaha BW5 (Zuma) We'd like one with a hinge so =

we can still open the back door if needed.....

If not McGiever (my hubbie) is going to weld one up....wish us luck..lol..
