Westfalias 80 thru Early 81 used the larger drain and waste water ventilation system because RV regulations in the US and Canada of the time required it. It was basically a "carry-over" design from the 76-79 Westies and in fact many of the parts interchange with it. Late 81-91 Westies used the simpler P-trap and Flex Hose without any vapor ventilation as the regulatory guys figured it wasn't really needed. In fact, this and similar systems today are used on small trailers being sold right now. -- Jim Thompson 84 GL 1.9 "Gloria" 84 Westfalia 2.1 "Ole Putt" 73 K Ghia Coupe "Denise" 72 411 Station Wagon "Pug" oldvolkshome@gmail.com http://www.oldvolkshome.com jim@airheadparts.com *********************************** On 8/6/08, craig cowan <phishman068@gmail.com> wrote: > > So i couldn't help but notice on my '80 westy donor, the sink drain is this > massive 2'' (ish) pipe and i can't help but think it's extremely excessive. > Furthermore, mine has some kind of EXTRA outlet on the outside of the van, > a > 4th plastic cover located higher than the others and right behind the > driver.
