I also see no difference in this and other Vanagon discussions and here's the "Vanagon specific" info I learned from this "rambling thread" so far.

The cap fails because it gets leaky, probably because the manufacturer used Aluminum Electrolytic. If you want the best chance of it never failing again then replace it with a tantalum cap. It's a royal PIA to get to so you want to do it once & do it right. You could possibly just eliminate the cap but why not replace it once you go through the pain of reaching it?

My suggestion is that if it's a thread you are not interested in, just delete it.

And just how is this different than "obscure" technical discussions of anti-sieze on bolts, tires, wheel alignment, or what year first came with "see-through" headrests?

Discussing how to best repair a Vanagon is Vanagon related. If this area of Vanagon discussion doesn't interest you, move to the next message. And if it's not Vanagon related, then it's the moderators' place to chastise, not yours.
