Locking diffs. unite the drive wheels into one unit. When you turn a corner both wheels will be forced to rotate exactly the same amount, but over the ground, the wheel on the 'inside' travels a shorter distance than the outside wheel. So one or the other of the wheels will be forced to 'skid' across the pavement. Odd handling behavior, diminished tire life and broken differentials can result.
