Wiring diagrams are our friend John, start with them. Trace the components on the circuit using the wiring diagram. note that the both are on the x relay controlled line. See if the wipers etc work (next time you have this fault) if you are pulling up on high beam stalk.

Didn't you have this problem a few weeks ago? or was it someone else. is this the same van that cut out on you?

why are you hesitating about ign switch btw?
