Scott, I'm not sure how you arrived at the conclusion that 'environmental and emissions' are exclusive only to 'e-tdis'. There is no proof or evidence to that point, at least when we are probably talking about the early TDI that coincidentally uses a primarily mechanical system to deliver fuel. Only with TDIs starting in 2004 (US market) did this change to 'true' electronic control. FWIW, my own modified m-TDI Syncro makes more power than my chipped Passat e-TDI, while it's emissions are far cleaner. The Syncro still gets 28 mpg all the time, 30 on slower days. Perhaps your feeling is clouded by other's attempts at setting up m-TDIs.

I am a little confused also by the statement "there is a direct connection from the combustion chamber to the air we breathe with the older style diesels" - virtually every internal combustion engine has a direct connection.
