works both ways .. when cold, coolant warms up faster than the oil ... and thus helps warm the oil .

when hot ...when oil temp is high, cooling system helps keep the oil temp from getting too high. there are limits to what the stock oil cooler can do.

An oil cooler/heat exchanger like this is generally always a low cost slight improvement .. worth 10 % or so. there are 'taller ones' ...from late VW's that will fit ....well ..not if the oil filter then runs into the exhaust pipe, like on a waterboxer. But tdi people install later, taller versions over the normal size though. scott
