Sure. If it was out of warranty (e.g. they don't warrant it when used with an engine conversion), assuming the a TDI gear reduction starter fits the GW mounting flange, why not? Just one example but Rockauto.com shows ~ $100 - $170 USD for new TDI starters. One might be able to shop around for price? However. If I got the Mullendore adaptor plate and a new TDI starter, I'm saving some bucks. And Karls web page specifies that the SR0408X/409X starters are gear reduction types.

Does anyone know if GW assembles their reduction starter from various Bosch or other parts?
