Joe, How bad are your componets?

Is this something you can do yourself? The vanagons brakes are not not too hard to do. I would say do it yourself and save some money. The following are some prices from the Bus Depot. for parts.

This is what I would replace if some of your brake parts are worn out:

Front rotors= 50ea 100 (I think that your front hubs and rotor are seperate so you might not need to get these yet*)

*Ft bearings inner= 20ea 40 -ft bearings *outter= 15ea 30 *grease seals= 5 10 *grease= 4 rear drums= 50ea 100 Ft caliper rebuild kit= 25 rear brake cylinders= 10ea 20 Ft pads= 30 Rear shoes= 25 Brake fluid= 15 Rear brake hoses= 20ea 40 Rear E-brake cables= 22ea 44 Ft Brake hose= 30ea 60

Total in parts= $543 Add in shipping @50- $60 (depends on your location)

If you must have a shop do the brake job see if you can supply the parts and they provide labor.

I looked at receipt for brake work from the PO of my 88 vanagon, he was CHARGED $300 EACH for front rotors, Bus Depot had OEM FOR ONLY $49.95. His bill was @900 for a front brake job, I replaced MY ENTIRE brake system- Master cylinder, rebuilt calipers, pads, shoes, clutch master and slave, rotors, drums, E-brake cables, fr and rr brake hoses, ft and rr bearings for less than ONE of the PO brake repairs. Try to do it yourself.

Take a quote from the brake shops to the friend and let him compare prices.
