I had this same problem on a recent trip to northern Canada. Being new to VW I could not tell if it was turning over properly or not, so I bought a new battery. Lets just say that now I have the Aux battery I wanted (but not the type I was looking for!). In addition to the starting problem, my van lost power on the tip back and can go only 50-55mph. I think it may be a fuel delivery problem or sparking problem. I have it in the shop now. I'll let you and the list know what the diagnosis is.

In addition, if you have the fridge with the diode readout, you can check the condition of the battery through the display. ><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>:-) Phillip Bouton (PLEASE NOTE NEW ADDRESS) National Association of County and City Health Officials 1100 17th Street, NW, 2nd Floor Washington, DC 20036 Ph. I would most certainly make sure that the oil is 10W30 or 10W40, as these are thinner when cold. Also make sure that the battery is filled up with water (boiled or distilled), and charged properly, you might want to consider a new battery.
