Subject: K&N Airfilter & Fuel Mileage?
Comments: To: vanagon@VANAGON.COM

Volks-

For the first 500 miles or so that I owned my 1984 Westy, I averaged 19.1 miles/gallon. After these first 500 miles, I replaced my "regular" paper airfilter with a K&N Airfilter (p/n 33-2003).

During the past 2 months (300 miles) with the K&N filter, I'm averaging 16.2 mpg. I think that my driving is ~about~ the same, though I am doing a little more city driving this fall. However, I haven't run the a/c in the past 2 months (as I did during those first 500 miles).

Do you think that this is a fluke?

Is this typical for a K&N filter - is my 10-20% fuel economy deficit simply the tradeoff for a bit more power? (Damn that 3rd law of thermodynamics!)

Any other thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

Thanks, Marty Wallace, 1984 Westfalia "Heisenberg" Chico, California
