The Rabbit manuals are far better than the Vanagon manual - however, I done a fair amount of wrenching, (heads, cv's, timing belts, strut replacement, etc) yet I still am often mystified on the van at times. It's not just a novive mechanic issue, but familiarity with the vechicle or the exact process you are getting into -

---SNIP--->To answer your question on the CVs. You need a special "triple >square" 8mm>hex socket. ---SNIP---

I believe the correct term is 12 point internal spline recess driver - anyone else on this?

----SNIP--- Before you begin the job, go to the>dealer and get some spare CV bolts.

My CV boots came with new bolts! (and snap rings & grease) Yeah! If you are pulling the CV's, I would put on new boots. My brand was "febi bilstein", west germany from my FLAPS, joint were "lobro" - have used them in the past with no complaints.

just my .02 John Reynolds 81 Westy
