Well, I believe it was originally recommended on the www.vanagon.com web site along with a couple of different installation options. I installed mine on its side, with the top posts pointing forward and the side posts up. In order to get the battery into the box I had to cut two slots about 1 inch wide for the top posts to pass by the metal lip that sticks out from the base that the seat bolts to. So that the side posts don't ground to the battery box lid, I cut out two rectangles about 1 1/2 inch by 2 inches from the edge of the lid centered over the side posts. Then I used black reinforced tape over the cut out areas so that only the tape makes contact with the top of the side posts. That's it... Not really all that hard... a tight fit but you have the satisfaction of knowing that you have the largest deep cycle battery that will fit into the box. I can not remember who recommended the optima d750 series for the auxiliary battery compartment behind the drivers seat for the Westy, but, now that I have ordered it and tried to put it in, I see its quite a tight fit. In fact if it does not fit upright in my '84 Thats ok its sealed and can go anyway, if it'll fit. I can not get it to go in sideways without some hammer/hacksaw work.

Before beating on my beloved westy, I thought it was worth asking the group. Is there a trick that I have not thought of yet. I took the seat off and tried everywhich way, with no success.

Who ever recommended these things, step into the light, let me know your secrets.. David Johnson Phone: 620-3251 Fax: 620-3540 Compliance and Enforcement Technician Timber, Horsefly B.C.
