Subject: Radiator fan shutoff problem
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

I recently had the AC recharged on my newly aquired '87GL. At this point or shortly thereafter, I determined the double resistor for low/mid fan speed had failed leaving me with only the high (turbo-jet)fan speed. Today I replaced the series resistor. Initially it seemed to be working OK. The fan turned on low when the AC was switched on (or when the coolant temperature was high) but when I turned the van off the fan continued to run...and run... and run.... I have to remove power via the the battery, the fan fuse (#1) or the fan relay (#5) to stop the fan. If I remove power in this manner with the coolant temperature low-normal, the fan will stop and won't re-start. until the AC is turned on or until the coolant temp is high. When the temperature is high, the fan will run as long as the power is not interrupted. When the temperature lowers to low-normal and I interrupt power it turns off and doesn't restart.

The relay acts as if it is wired in a latch or hold circuit.

Has anyone had this problem before?
